Description
Alphagan® P eye drops are manufactured by Allergan. This ophthalmic treatment contains Brimonidine as an active ingredient. Brimonidine is an ocular hypotensive agent and alpha adrenergic agonist.
Indications:
- elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to open-angle glaucoma (also known as chronic glaucoma);
- elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to other eye conditions (eye trauma, pseudoexfoliation syndrome, pigment dispersion syndrome and corneal arcus).
MOA (mechanism of action):
Brimonidine is a selective alpha2-agonist that lowers intraocular pressure without causing mydriasis (dilation of the pupil of the eye). Brimonidine has dual action towards IOP, as it reduces aqueous humor synthesis and increases uveoscleral aqueous humor outflow. Brimonidine in a form of gel may reduce erythema through direct vasoconstriction.
Dosage
For increased IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
Adults: instill 1 drop (Brimonidine 0,2%, 0,1%, or 0,15% ophthalmic solution) in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.
Children over 2 years: instill 1 drop of Brimonidine 0,2% ophthalmic solution in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily, at 8-hour interval.
Brimonidine may be used concomitantly with other ophthalmic medications for lowering IOP. Administer each ophthalmic medication at 10-minute interval.
Precautions
Alphagan® P eye drops are not intended for use in children under 2 years of age.
Alphagan® P solution is for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.
Alphagan® P solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Alphagan® P immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.
Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.
Contact lenses should be removed before administrating Alphagan® P eye drops and may be reinserted after 15 minutes.
Wash your hands before using the eye drops.
Missing a dose
If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 2 to 25 degrees C (36 to 77 degrees F), away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.
